About MOKA
Mission
MOKA literally means using the forces of motivation to excel and achieve.
MOKA spiritually means uniting with the supernatural power that allows you to do such.
Whatever the sport, art, or craft – it can be achieved, because ALL things are possible!
About The Director
Avery Wilson is a native of Baton Rouge, LA and a graduate of Southern University and A&M College. This Honors College graduate became one of the youngest SGA Presidents to be elected, at age 19, and later became the first student from Southern to be elected the National President of all Historically Black Colleges & Universities. His extended collegiate involvement also included becoming a Student Member to the Southern University Board of Supervisors, USAA Academic Collegiate Scholar, 2-time Collegiate All-American Cheerleader, SU Look Dancers Coach & Choreographer, and the NASAP National Student of the Year.
It was not until Wilson graduated that he realized he could pursue a furthered study of dance and business. Having been a four-year staff instructor of the National Cheerleading Association, he was inspired to create his own vision that catered specifically to the underserved schools and communities in need. At the age of 21, Wilson became the CEO/Founder of the MOKA Cheerleading & Dance Association. MOKA quickly became Baton Rouge’s most well-known organization for kids to express their artistic talents and a local mechanism to explore their life’s purpose. Using motivation as the key ingredient, the company has touched the lives of youth through studio dance, all-star cheerleading, all-star dance, choreography, and continues to branch out to surrounding states with summer encampment.
Wilson’s business life is counterbalanced with his professional career as a dancer, singer, model, and actor. He has studied and trained at the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater in New York. He has danced professionally overseas with the Lido Champs-Elysees of Paris, France, as a company member of the Adrienne Celeste Fadjo Contemporary Dance Company of NYC, and has performed in over 10 countries with the Jean Ann Ryan Production Company and Spirit Productions Company. Wilson currently performs as a company member of the Dallas Black Dance Theatre of Dallas, TX and Jill Rucci's 8&1 Contemporary Dance Company. A genuine lover of theatre, Wilson has also toured with Actress/Director/Producer Debbie Allen, worked with Choreographer/Actor Darrin Henson, and has starred in various shows including
Aida, Twist and Shout, Fame, The Spirit of Broadway, The Wiz, and Rent. His musical theatre choreography has been seen on several stages with several shows including
Beauty and the Beast, Smokey Joe's Cafe, and Hairspray. Avery thanks God everyday for a talent and gift to entertain and nurture young people. He believes he was born to lead, and his life’s journey will forever have purpose as he continues to live in a spirit of service.
